?We’ve been working our tails off for a long time now (Nova Clutch is now 5 years old!), and the future is lookin’ bright. We spent a lot of our time working on this little recording studio business we call Casa Nova Studios. In 3 years, it went from zero to hero and established a great client base along with letting us work on making every kind of music under the sun, sometimes for large corporate entities such as Mercedes-Benz, Samsung, Kodak, Nautica, and Rocawear; sometimes for wonderful independent artists and/or producers, mostly based in New York, but certainly not always. This work, which has been mostly compositional in nature, has been a wonderful breeding ground for tricks and ideas which inevitably trickle down into our own pet project, Nova Clutch.
?This mostly backbreaking work has been a double-edged sword. On one hand, its been amazing to really hammer out all this different kind of music, really testing our music making abilities and keeping us super sharp. Not to mention its pretty fun 99% of the time. On the other hand, it certainly takes time away from what we’d rather be doing, and that’s rockin’ it out with the band. And then there’s that “rest of our life” thing (relationships, friends, family) that always seem to (kindly) remind us of how insanely we’ve been working. This is an almost impossible balance to strike, and certainly, we aren’t always good at it. There’s also that ever-present sometimes shortage of money that throws some sand in the gears, too! However, we’ve been pushing forward for our collective lives because we believe its worth it.
?And it is. This point in time is the culmination of our efforts. Through years of recording rehearsals and jamming, writing , we have reached boiling point in terms of material and the need to get out and break some shit on stage. At last count, we’ve got enough material for a couple full records and then some, with no signs of slowing down. So we’ve decided that small chunks are going to be the way to rock it out for the long haul.
?A steady string of EP’s are going to be released, the first of which is going to be completed in August. Our first preview track (a rough mix) is available for listening at www.myspace.com/novaclutch It’s called Grenade Pin.
?There are a couple of reasons we think this is the best way for release. One of them is certainly not any hatred for the record as an art form. We are great lovers of something we believe will never die. However, times change, and all must change with it or be left behind. We are changing in the way we believe will help us move forward. Due to the time and money that must be spent to make an album, a FULL album, its not feasible without a budget. We have no budget. We never have. We have our free time, and even that costs money. In knowing this, we either adapt or forever make things difficult for ourselves. Putting out a full album takes a lot of time, putting out a small collection of songs takes infinitely less time. So the way this is going to go down is that we’re going to release 5-6 songs at a time, and do this continuously over the course of next year. So the time between releases becomes much shorter, and more music becomes available quicker.
?This doesn’t mean we won’t be assembling records, far from it. In fact, the plan is to release the material in chunks, but to still assemble an album based on those chunks, and sequence albums from those chunks. Thus providing for the album we so desire to make, but allowing for lots of music to be released and experimentation to flow across many small releases.
?The music business is in a strange place, stranger than ever. We started our studio business three years ago in order to navigate the rough waters of a business which is no longer designed to foster the creativity of a young band trying to make music. The way the business is run these days, a label expects you to have already done all of the hard work (aka building a fan base, selling records, touring the country) before they even sign on board. We wanted to create ourselves a foundation to build a career off of, a full career of making music and crafting arts and media of all kinds, and it has helped us to do just that. We have surrounded ourselves with wonderful creative people, and together we’re continually a powerful community capable of bringing incredible projects to fruition.
?Over the next year you’re going to see a series of releases and output from Nova Clutch and Casa Nova Studios which encompasses our existence. In January, we started work with a good friend Rafael Santiago on a video series which is going to be a documentary/art film/music video. It will intermingle studio footage, live shows, leisure time (this is very little of this), unreleased music, and tour footage to create an artful collage of music and visuals. This will be released in an episode format which will be downloadable and viewable from YouTube and our website and myspace. There is a preview of both the documentary available for consumption on www.myspace.com/novaclutch
?Furthermore, we’re going to be working on many other projects which we’ll be reporting on soon. There are many things which are almost about to come to light, but we’re careful not to spoil the surprise or jinx them.
?Most importantly, why do I write all of this? Because I think the story is important to understanding the music. I think that music is one of the most important things we have in our lives, and in order for it to continue to thrive in this modern world, the way its created must be done in a new way. Our multi-faceted approach to making music and running our business is assuring that we can continue to make new and inventive music. We hope you stay tuned to our portal of creativity for the years to come. We’ve only just begun.
?Stay posted, there is a lot happening! New music now! More new music soon!
?We love you all, thanks for your continued support and love. We promise to rock more and more.
