EP’s are the new Albums (and other revelations)

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I have been reading a lot of wonderful dialog about the ideal and proper length of the “album” as we’ve known it for years, and it seems that the whole hearted reply to this question is much shorter. Who the hell has 60+ minutes to listen to something straight at this point? Who even wants to? What was the last album that long you heard that you could sit through? Just cause the CD holds more, does it mean it needs to be filled?

I feel not. And this is why with our upcoming releases (Nova Clutch & Jenda Wight), we are choosing to release EP’s, which are essentially what albums used to be: tight productions of very listenable music. This makes more sense for a number of reasons, but the modern attention span is quickly becoming the best reason for the truncating of the album. The other reason is, why not just have 8 great songs? It worked for many years. Why have 13 and only like 7?

Our plan is simple. More EP’s, less albums. 2 EP’s in one year rather than 1 album in a year and a half. More music = more happy. Yes! The EP is the new album indeed. And we can’t wait to bring you some.

Also, we’re giving serious thought to the possibility of releasing vinyl and giving away MP3/FLAC files with the vinyl release. Is this something you think you’d be into? Let us know, we’re asking.

The Nova Clutch EP is slated for release on January 10th, 2008. Kicking off the new year with a bang. A wonderful party is in the works with our friends at Snitch (www.snitchbar.com). Mark your calendars now, the place is gonna be a madhouse.

Assembling the Troops

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

As any creative person will tell you, it takes more time and money than you ever thought to do the things you want to accomplish. These days, its the time. You can’t put time away, its flying past you at all times. You either use it or not, but its still on the way to the future. We’re on our way to the future. The future is awesome. Everything is free, but it costs you in time. YOu wanna download free music? You gotta find it. You wanna use some open source software to run your business? You gotta configure it. Its all going to take a little bit of your life away. And when you don’t have enough time, you get help. And when you’re lucky, you have good help. We are lucky. We are thankfully surrounded by wonderfully talented and amazing people, and when we truly need the help, they are there. Right now is the time we’ve needed help the most. With two CD releases pending (Nova Clutch & Jenda Wight), a revamp of two web sites, and countless other creative tasks (videos, DVDs, design, etc) are figured into this, you can pretty much count on never sleeping again.

With that said, we’re not sleeping much.

But, what we are doing is moving forward with these friends of ours that are helping. Our collective efforts will be made known soon, as this insane 2007 comes to a close. We’re making great efforts to bring wonderful people together for the making of music, good times, and most importantly, progress. All of these alliances and more will be made known.

In the meantime, check our calendar on www.novaclutch.net or www.myspace.com/novaclutch, these upcoming events will be a sneak peak into 2008 and how totally stellar its going to be. Life is good.

p.s. this is what the future looks like:

The Future is Awesome

R.I.P. OiNK

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

For those of you who weren’t hip to it, OiNK has been a below-the-radar goldmine for music lovers of all kinds. It was a torrent tracker based on a tightly administered community of pirates working in concert to provide the kind of experience that the modern music lover has dreamed of: a seamless gathering of anything that interests you, with the only price being that you provide what you take for people to take as well. It was like what a record store in the 60’s must have felt like, except even better! There was the feeling that everyone there was so excited to be a part of this community, whatever you were looking for it was there, and many versions of it for that matter! High quality live shows, shit you’ve never heard of, the ability to see what everyone else was getting into, and a dialog of hundreds of thousands of truly devoted fans doing it for the love. Mind you, this process was unfortunately illegal, and has now been reduced to an advertisement for the powers which have shut them down:

This is no doubtedly going to make bigger splashes as the weeks unfold just what it is the authorities choose to make of this situation, but I can surely assure you this: there will be many others to take its place. This battle shouldn’t continue forever, they should fill the void of what consumers want, which is exactly what this was providing. A trusted source of great, hard to find, and high quality files across all generes with a rabid userbase ready to help you and turn you on to things.

Isn’t that what music is really all about? How long is it gonna take before the record industry realizes and acts on this? In the meantime, those of us in the “record” business are going to continue to learn and search out the new ways to do this on our own, and keep teaming up with those who wish to help create that better experience. I will say this, though, OiNK may have provided the closest thing to a great consumer experience that has been provided in the digital age.
R.I.P. OiNK.

The Rock Revolution 2.0

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Here at Casa Nova Studios, we believe that something epic is brewing in music, and that’s not us tooting our own horns, its happening all around you. Look around! Do you remember what it was like to be excited about music? Do you find yourself being excited again, wondering what your next favourite record is going to be, what people are doing, where all this cool music is coming from? I know I am. I can’t sleep because of it. There’s so much awesome shit going on that its freaking me out.

With any revolution, there are scenes and partnerships which help it along. Right now, we are in the midst of some wonderful partnerships, which are going to present themselves in fantastic ways in the near future. Partnerships with wonderful, maniacial people who envision the world a cooler place. If you’re getting excited about music in 2008, get even MORE excited than you were. Its going to be great. Buy a new hard drive, the revolution will be downloaded. And there’s going to be a lot of it.

fall? summer? time for spring cleaning?

Monday, October 8th, 2007

We’re all three hard at work at our terminals here at Casa Nova Studios, working on a big push to show you just what we’re all about. Just what does that entail? Well, it involves a lot of thinking about who we are. Just who are we? We’re writers, we’re engineers, we’re producers, and musicians. But how do you fit all that on to a DVD, or a web site, or even on a business card? Good question!

I’ll tell you what, there isn’t anything or anyone that can tell you how to run or manage a creative business, even if they’ve done it before successfully themselves. There are just too many variables to nail it down to something fixed. However, we are in the midst of a well thought out way to let the peoples know what we do and how we do it. And a lot of it is fun. We have fun doing this, and we want the client to both understand why that is important and what it does to our work. So we’re putting our brains together and doing it. And like any business, there is always room to improve the way things are done. So, in the midst of a weird “fall” we’re doing some spring cleaning. And praying for rain. And cold. Fast.

In the meantime, we’ll be announcing some more “Casa Nova Studios Presents!” dates soon. We’re still buzzing from our first one.
