EP’s are the new Albums (and other revelations)
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007I have been reading a lot of wonderful dialog about the ideal and proper length of the “album” as we’ve known it for years, and it seems that the whole hearted reply to this question is much shorter. Who the hell has 60+ minutes to listen to something straight at this point? Who even wants to? What was the last album that long you heard that you could sit through? Just cause the CD holds more, does it mean it needs to be filled?
I feel not. And this is why with our upcoming releases (Nova Clutch & Jenda Wight), we are choosing to release EP’s, which are essentially what albums used to be: tight productions of very listenable music. This makes more sense for a number of reasons, but the modern attention span is quickly becoming the best reason for the truncating of the album. The other reason is, why not just have 8 great songs? It worked for many years. Why have 13 and only like 7?
Our plan is simple. More EP’s, less albums. 2 EP’s in one year rather than 1 album in a year and a half. More music = more happy. Yes! The EP is the new album indeed. And we can’t wait to bring you some.
Also, we’re giving serious thought to the possibility of releasing vinyl and giving away MP3/FLAC files with the vinyl release. Is this something you think you’d be into? Let us know, we’re asking.
The Nova Clutch EP is slated for release on January 10th, 2008. Kicking off the new year with a bang. A wonderful party is in the works with our friends at Snitch (www.snitchbar.com). Mark your calendars now, the place is gonna be a madhouse.
